Soul and Charm of Nuo Opera—Chinese Art Exhibition of Nuo Opera to be Held

Release Time: 2017-11-01

On Jan. 20, 2014, the Soul and Charm of Nuo Opera—Chinese Art Exhibition of Nuo Opera·Nuo Opera Mask will be held in the temporary exhibition hall of the Jinsha Site Museum. It is co-sponsored by the Chengdu Jinsha Site Museum, Guizhou Cultural Palace of Nationalities and the Cultural Palace of Nationalities in Beijing, and tops Sichuan for its largest scale and most complete content on Nuo culture. Currently, the preparation work now is in progress. Let’s visit the Museum first to see the mysterious world of “Nuo” and its charms.

Soul and Charm of Nuo Opera, Telling You the Past Stories

The Exhibition is divided into two units: “The Charm of Nuo—Nuo Opera Art” and “The Expression of Nuo— Nuo Opera Mask Art”, and covered its connotation, origination, species, performance, types, modeling, color and process of masks as well as stories behind them. Almost 400 masks related to Nuo culture are on exhibition, and the number tops China in the history. Other costumes, swords, seals and ox horns are also exhibited. By highlighting the background of Nuo, the exhibition will be much more interesting and ornamental that visitors could know the past, the present and the cultural connotation of Nuo in a specified space.

“Nuo” Masks Telling You Their Stories

Amongst the masks, most of them have their stories, like the Ms. Pioneer who is dignified in manner and well developed. Arch eyebrow, slanted eyes, cherry lips and the phoenix coronet make her a great lady but in fact, she is a “pioneer” who dares to challenge the King of the Hill, who is in charge of the Peach Cave and who has many amazing stories. Since childhood, she got separated from her brother who later became a King of the Mountain and intended to take her his wife. Luckily, the lady was good at martial art that she tied up the king but finally found him her brother. After the ups and downs, there is no doubt that she always has a calm and superior expression.

A Show on Wire

On the exhibition, we also saw 9 masks hanged in the independent exhibition cabinet with extremely thin fish wires just like a show on wire. According to the museum introduction, the fish wires are used to suspend the masks and show their intangible artistic temperament and wonderful stories. Never underestimate a fish wire. It is capable to bear a load of almost 10kg. The seemingly simple way of suspension was once a great challenge to exhibitors. First of all, all principles are based on safety of the cultural relics. Exhibitors have to find the balance point of the mask with great care before suspension. Even a small number of masks had cost the whole team almost 2 days. Its difficulty is true clear.

Exhibits within Reach, Dialogue with Soul

In the exhibition hall we also saw an oval wall, on which, masks in different models and colors were hanged, quite a shock to eyes. The principal of the exhibition told us that almost 100 masks would be exhibited barely and it is indeed a bold attempt for the purpose to shorten the distance between visitors and the masks so that they would have a dialogue and experience of its mystery.

Beautiful Exhibition Space

This time, some new changes are made to the temporary exhibition all that we saw new elements. To accommodate the grand exhibition and the rich Nuo culture in a limited space, walls, partitions and plates are well arranged to make the exhibition space flexible and extend the line so that the space gives a balanced sense of volume, fiction and fact, brightness and shadow, statics and dynamics, and dynamic shadow to adapt to the theme of the exhibition and harmonize it with the surrounding atmosphere.

On the site, we also saw the light controllers, multimedia installers and showcase makers in hurry and finally knew all the hardships and efforts behind.

It is learned that the exhibition will improve the cultural background and taste of the Jinsha Site Museum. It is of great significance to the development of cultural tourism during the Spring Festival in Chengdu.
