“The Discovery and Inheritance of Dazu Rock Carvings” Opens at Jinsha Site Museum

  August 16, 2020 is the fifteenth anniversary of the Sun and Immortal Bird Gold Ornament becoming a symbol of China's cultural heritage. On the same day, the exhibition "The Discovery and Inheritance of Dazu Rock Carvings", organized by the Jinsha Site Museum in Chengdu and the Dazu Rock Carvings Research Institute in Chongqing, was opened at Jinsha Site Museum, which makes this anniversary more meaningful in terms of classic inheritance. The exhibition with more than 90 pieces /sets focuses on the unique aesthetic connotation of Dazu Rock carvings, exquisite carving techniques and advanced cultural preservation achievements.

  Craftsmanship: Passing Down from Generation to Generation

  At the opening ceremony, Dazu Rock Carving Research Institute presented the Collection of Dazu Rock Carvings to Jinsha Site Museum. As the first collection of archaeological reports written for Dazu Rock carvings in China, this collection was compiled by hundreds of experts and scholars for 14 years, which will provide useful reference to the Ancient Shu Culture joint bid program of UNESCO World Heritage.

  The opening day of the exhibition was also the 15th anniversary of the Sun and Immortal Bird Gold Ornament becoming the symbol of China's cultural heritage, which has witnessed the outstanding achievements of China's cultural heritage protection work, and the resilience of the people of arts and culture and expositions who have stood firm and made progress in perseverance.

  Highlights of the Collections in Chengdu

  Dazu Rock carvings have long been famous at home and abroad, roadshow footprints all over the world. Compared with the Dazu Rock carvings previous international exhibitions, this one in Jinsha not only has the largest number of cultural relics exhibits, but also, for the first time, got a collective debut of three key highlights of the Dazu Rock carvings in Chengdu. From a more comprehensive point of view, the exhibition shows the world cultural heritage style of Dazu Rock carvings to the audience.

  Digital Technology: Revitalizing the Heritage

  It is reported that, in order to make up for the pity that some rock carvings cannot be in Chengdu, the exhibition used light box scenography, over 300 inches of giant projection and other means of display, to offer the audience an immersive tour of Dazu Rock carvings.

  Three 3D-printed replicas of cultural relics are also on display. For those who want to know more about the research of Dazu Rock carvings, Jinsha Site Museum has also developed an online platform to share more documentary data related to rock carvings with the audience. Apart from these, the restoration process which lasted for eight years of the Thousand-Handed Goddess will also be in the exhibition. The audience can also experience the restoration of the Thousand-Handed Goddess in person by means of the interactive equipment.

  The exhibition will run until January 3, 2021.
