World Theatre Day:Wings of Icarus Performed at Jinsha, Educational Drama Offers New Exhibition Experience

Release Time: 2025-03-27

On March 27th, to mark the annual World Theatre Day, the Jinsha Site Museum partnered with Tianfu No.7 Middle School to co-create a distinctive educational drama experience.

The special exhibition hall "Exploration on Greek Mythology: Myths, Heroes, and Destiny-Trasures from Apulia Felix, Italy" was transformed into a dynamic stage for students performing the play Wings of lacrus. Based on classical Greek mythology, the play tells the story of Daedalus, an architect who loses the trust of the King of Crete after helping the Athenian prince slay the Minotaur. He crafts wings from wax and feathers to escape with his son, Icarus. During their flight, Icarus ignores his father's warnings, flies too close to the sun, melts his wings, and tragically falls into the sea. The play reveals that the father of the Minotaur is the Cretan Bull subdued by the demigod Heracles.

On stage, as the student playing Icarus spread his arms, flapping his "wings" while gradually ascending toward the " sun "the audience held their breath, seemingly feeling the tension as the wings melted under the intense heat. When Icarus finally "plummeted" to the ground, silence enveloped the room, pierced only by the low, resonant music filling the air. Through their innocent and compelling performance, the students vividly portrayed Icarus's yearning for freedom and relentless pursuit of dreams, breathing new life into this ancient myth.

Following the performance, museum docents used six Greek deities featured in the exhibition as a lens to delve into the daily life, artistic achievements, spiritual beliefs, and cultural legacy of ancient Greece. Simultaneously, students enthusiastically participated in drama workshops, learning performance techniques and experiencing the unique allure of theatrical art through interactive sessions. The event culminated in a novel coloring experience where the audience, armed with paintbrushes, meticulously colored plaster casts of Greek deities. This creative activity brought the mythological figures to life under their bruses, leaving participants with a lasting impression of this cultural journey.
